The Stillness of the Kotare:  Autumnal Reflections

Each morning, the Kotare — New Zealand’s native kingfisher — perches silently on the fence posts that stretch across our paddocks. Still and watchful, they seem to hold space for some ancient wisdom. Since we arrived at Tranquility for Wellness nearly three years ago, more and more birds have found their way to this peaceful space. It’s as if the land itself is beginning to breathe a little deeper.

At the moment, we have the quiet joy of observing the Kotare from a distance. They’re reasonably camera-shy, and without a high-powered lens, it’s hard to capture a photo that does them justice. Normally solitary birds, we’re incredibly lucky to have up to four visiting daily. They love to sit on the fence posts in the paddock, scanning the land in complete stillness.

Kotare nest by burrowing into the banks of rivers and streams. While we’re far from any large bodys of water, a small man-made creek at the edge of our property may be just enough to make them feel at home.

The Wisdom of the Kotare

Some of New Zealand’s native birds have been assigned symbolic gifts in Wisdom of the Four Winds, a beautiful book by Barry Brailsford. Written in 1999, it explores the ancient wisdom woven into nature in New Zealand.

The Kingfisher (Kotare) holds the gift of Vigilance — the power of being still, silent, and aware. Brailsford writes:

“Find insight in reflection and power in stillness. Go into the stillness, the silent place within, and listen to the voice of the wise one who waits to guide you. Decide what is now important in your life.”

When the kingfisher moves, it is swift and decisive — no wasted energy, no hesitation.

Seasonal Stillness and Renewal

With the cooler, darker months approaching, this message feels especially poignant. I’m beginning to slow down, stepping back from the garden and turning inward — to contemplate, reflect, and sift through the layers of life.

Like the Kotare, I’m will begin to take more time to sit in the quiet, allowing what no longer serves me to fall away. I’m making space for new seeds to take root — ready to bloom when spring returns.

An Invitation to share

What is happening in your life at the moment? Is this a season for reflection, stillness, and inner renewal?
I’d love to hear how you’re navigating this quieter time of year — feel free to share your positive insights in the comments.
