Between Screens and Stillness

A new year has begun, bringing fresh energy. Change is always happening within us and around us—are you open to embracing it?

Back in November, I listened to a podcast about putting your phone down for a while and allowing yourself to simply be bored. How does that idea make you feel? I’ve hummed and haa-ed about writing a blog on this ever since.

I loved the sentiment of the podcast, and lately I’ve noticed a bit of a knee-jerk reaction within myself around technology and social media. The amount of scrolling I do — sometimes just to waste time — makes me pause. Am I bored? Looking for distraction? Procrastinating? Or simply avoiding stillness?

Technology is here to stay — that’s a given. Computers and AI can bring us many positive aspects. I’m using technology right now to write and share this blog. Yet I find myself searching for a balance between the digital world and the natural one.

Am I missing out on being fully present in the real world — even when it doesn’t feel particularly inspiring? Am I always looking outward into other people’s worlds instead of resting within my own? Sometimes I don’t want to look at my inner world, and I’m okay with that too. There is a time and a place for everything.

Ironically, I listened to that podcast online.

As I write this, I glance up every now and again, gathering ideas while looking out of the window at the trees, long grass, the corner of the vegetable garden. I can hear the gentle rustle of leaves and the sound of birds nearby. It’s in these quiet moments that something shifts.

Notice what happens when we pause

I’ve been more creative. I’ve had more time. I’ve dusted off and revisited hobbies from before having children, before the internet and Wi-Fi. They’re not quick or instant - they take time, patience, and sometimes a little (or a lot of) contemplation. I’m drawing on my own inner wisdom… although I’ll admit, YouTube is still there if I get stuck!

So where do you sit on this subject?

As we move into 2026, I’m thriving on simplicity and being reminded that we already hold so much wisdom within us. We simply have to take the time to listen.

Does your well being take a back seat?

If this reflection resonates with you and you’re feeling the pull towards more simplicity and stillness, my wellbeing sessions are designed to support you in slowing down, reconnecting with yourself, and gently restoring balance. You’re warmly welcome to explore this space with me.

Stillness has a way of guiding us home.
