The Calm Within the Storm: Reclaim Simplicity
In times of turmoil, solitude can become your most powerful tool—helping you reconnect without distraction.
Where am I going this month? Firstly, the washing is on—I too have everyday things to do, like housework. And so, with this familiar domestic sound quietly in the background, here I go.
Why do I write a monthly blog?
As far as Google is concerned, the purpose of a blog is often to sell something. But what if my intention is simply to share thoughts—reflections on what I have found meaningful in my own life—things that guide me towards a more peaceful and simple space?
As we arrive at the end of March, we’ve passed that balance point between earth and sun. And already, this year feels like a bit of a roller coaster. The world continues to change, and so do we.
But what do we truly have control over? What can we influence the most—the outer world, or our inner one?
I believe we have the most influence on ourselves, and how we respond to the situations we encounter. Yet, with so much happening around us, are we being distracted by the noise of the outside world? Do we forget to turn inwards, simply be with ourselves, because there is so much going on?
To know thyself
This ancient idea, often attributed to the Greeks, still holds meaning today. When we begin to understand our selves more fully, our emotions—what motivates us, what we desire, our strengths and our limitations—we are better equipped to make choices that feel right for us.
Find still points during your day
So I invite you to pause. Even if it's simply for a few minutes in your day.
Notice how you are in this moment. Ground yourself by feeling your feet on the surface beneath you. Are you calm? Restless? Overwhelmed? On edge?
And then ask yourself—can I relax more? Can I let go, even just a little?
Take a couple of slow, deep breaths. Imagine yourself sitting in the eye of a storm, where everything is still and peaceful. And perhaps, in that moment, you might even find a small sense of lightness—a quiet giggle arising—as you realise this calm place has been within you all along.
Be authentic
By encouraging ourselves to be authentic and real, and by honouring the many layers of who we are, we begin to recognise that we are more than just the physical.
We are, in many ways, imperfectly perfect.
And while life will always move and change around us, there are simple tools we can return to—again and again—to support a sense of calm and inner peace.
